Location: On Exhibit with Haywood County Arts Council, Waynesville, NC

Most of the time when I create the shoes for this project, i stick pretty close to the original design of the shoe. WIth Ruby Valentino, I wanted to explore the texture of the leather through the contrast of black and white. As I was deciding on using an additional color to make the shoe pop, I couldn’t help but think, “What’s black and white and re(a)d all over?” And so I chose a deep red to embellish.

I didn’t stop there. I decided I wanted to see what would happen if I used larger chunks of glass, in particular glass that changes colors depending on the light; they’re like light colored amethysts sparkling around the shoe.

After the shoe was finished and I was photographing, I had to chuckle, the red tip immediately took my mind to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. And from that to Rudy Valentino, as this shoe is very high fashion. I thought I’d play a bit with the red color in the name, and that’s how Ruby Valentino got it’s name.
