Memories from Long Ago

Pink Woman’s slip on dress shoe

The shoes belonged to my mother. She sent them to me to wear with a dress for a wedding I was attending. I never ended up wearing, these shoes but kept them in the original box, with my mother’s name hand-written on the outside.

These shoes presented a lot of challenge to me while casting. The soles fell apart the heel was stiff and the shape didn’t lend itself well to a single mold. I ended up building the shoe in parts including a clay version of the sole. In remolding the shoe several times it began to take on a new shape, texture and story. It is rough and wrinkled, have holes in places. And the soles? Bumpy and uneven. Not unlike people, these shoes tell of a life well lived and the good and tough times over the years.
