My son was a very independent child. When his sister went off to kindergarten, we would walk her to the bus stop a house away. I don’t think it had been more than 3 or 4 days, and I said that it was time to take her. Sitting in front of the TV, he turned and said, “Mama, I stay home.”
The next year I worked overnight shifts at Kohls to earn money to take the kids to Disneyland. He would wake up, head out to the living room and watch TV. When he got hungry, he’d come wake me up to get him breakfast.
As he grew, I noticed his shoes had holes in them. I’m not even sure he actually noticed his toes poked through, or that the sole was worn so thin his sock showed.
